Swim legend Michael Phelps extends tally to 21 Olympic gold medals

Wellington, Aug 10 : Swimming great Michael Phelps has clinched his 21st Olympic gold medal as United States won the men's 4x200 freestyle relay at the Rio Olympics being held in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.

Earlier in the day, the 31-year-old most decorated Olympian in history had won his 200 metres butterfly after avenging South African defending champion Chad Le Clos' victory over him at the 2012 London Olympics.

Reflecting on his glorious triumph, Phelps said he had accomplished his mission of exacting revenge in Rio and win it for the one last time, Stuff.co.nz reported.

Phelps further said that the 200 metres butterfly was his 'bread and butter', referring that the event was his first race he swam at an Olympics, at Sydney in 2000.

With the win, Phelps has now extended his medal tally to staggering 25 medals, which includes two silvers and two bronzes.
