DRT directs bank not to disburse amount deposited by Diageo in Mallya’s favour

New Delhi, May 17 : The Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) on Tuesday directed the J.P. Morgan Bank not to disburse the 40 million USD amount deposited by British liquor giant Diageo in favour of liquor baron Vijay Mallya. The DRT also directed the bank to provide statement of transaction since February 25, 2016, till date. It also directed the bank to attach the shares held by Mallya in the companies. The court passed an ex-party order while hearing the petition that was filed by consortium of banks led by the State Bank of India seeking the same. Diageo had on May 12 submitted the settlement agreement to the DRT. The DRT in early March barred Mallya from accessing the 75 million USD (Rs. 515 crore) exit payment from Diageo till the loan default case with the SBI is settled. The DRT, allowing an SBI plea, restrained Diageo from disbursing the money. The SBI had sought the DRT’s intervention in seeking the lenders’ first right on the USD 75-million payout from Diageo to Mallya as part of the deal earlier in February.

The NGT earlier today issued a notice to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar for his alleged remarks that the fine imposed by the green panel for organizing an event on banks f river Yamuna was politically motivated. “At the NGT proceedings today, it was specifically pointed out by The Art of Living lawyers that applications filed by Mr Anand Arya and Mr. Mishra were based merely on news paper reports and that the tribunal ought not to entertain the same.” the Art of Living statement said. “It was also clarified by The Art of Living that the allegations about Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at the NGT was misconceived since the video of the speech was available with Art Of Living and demonstrate that the allegation was completely false,” it added. The Art of Living further said that it would respond to NGT’s notice and warned the complainant of strict action if allegations are found without credible basis. “Court in fact warned Mr. Manoj Mishra that if he is not able to prove his allegation, he will be penalized,” the statement added. China, Pakistan pushing Sri Lanka to buy flawed JF-17 fighter aircraft

London, May 6 : China and Pakistan are wheeling and dealing in a big way to influence the Sri Lankan leadership to buy the highly-flawed JF-17 multi-role fighter jet in a deal which promises at least four million dollars per jet as kickbacks to those who are pushing for this sale. According to a report in the Sri Lanka-based web site www.thesundayleader.lk, a former air force chief and a big business wheeler-dealer are attempting to influence the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) to acquire the multi-role JF-17 ‘Fierce Dragon’ fighter aircraft that has been jointly developed by both China and Pakistan, at a price said to be higher than what is on offer from other international combat aircraft manufacturers. According to sources, former Air Force Commander Air Marshal Jayalath Weerakkody had visited Pakistan many times to hold discussions with the Pakistani Air Force Chief for purchasing JF-17 aircraft. The present Air Force Commander Gagan Bulathsinhala too has made a few visits to Pakistan for the same reason. It is also being alleged that Air Marshal Weerakkody, who was later posted to Pakistan as Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner, continued to discuss the JF-17 purchase with the Pakistani officials. Recalled to Sri Lanka after the fall of the Rajapaksa regime, Weerakkody is still a frequent visitor to the SLAF headquarters to get this deal through.

The web site quoted an SLAF unnamed source, as saying that the JF-17 will cost the SLAF a staggering USD 29 million, while the same aircraft can be purchased from a reputed Russian manufacturer at a cost ranging between USD 20 and USD 25 million. The source further alleges that both China and Pakistan are well aware that the JF-17 has no takers in the international air force circuit, but middlemen in these two countries appear determined to promote this aircraft and get a commission of more than USD four million per aircraft. According to the source, the JF-17 is an indigenous product and a country like Sri Lanka is not in a position to invest such a huge amount on jet fighters whose qualities are largely unknown. On the other hand, the Sri Lankan government has to take into account the security-related concerns of the Indian government, which is also keen to offer the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited-manufactured multi-role Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) ‘Tejas’ to Colombo. The source said that there is no doubt that the SLAF is in dire need to purchase combat aircrafts. The Sunday leader web site has quoted SLAF sources, as saying that the air force had failed to get the required sanction for the purchase of the jet fighters during the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime, and added that whatever has been purchased so far has been through shady deals with and from disreputable companies. The SLAF is keen to purchase eight new fighter aircraft and does want to spend time overhauling its existing fleet of planes at a prohibitive cost of about USD three million per aircraft. Reports suggest that with pressure mounting on Sri Lanka, incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to put off the purchase of the JF-17 fighter aircraft from Pakistan and go for a viable deal with Russia instead. According to media reports, the Cabinet last week took a decision to put off the purchase of the Sino-Pakistan JF-17 fighter jet aircraft indefinitely to prevent possible India’s ill-feelings towards Sri Lanka. Sources said that the present commanders of the three defence services and a representative from Sri Lanka Logistics are currently in Russia to discuss the purchase of the aircraft for the SLAF. However, SLAF spokesman Group Captain Chandima Alwis has said that the air force is carrying out a due diligence study of potential fighter aircraft suppliers in the event the SLAF need to add to their existing fleet. The Sri Lankan Air Force (SLAF) presently has a fleet of Israeli Kfirs and Russian-made MiG-27s.

Romance scams

While the Internet has provided a huge venue for people to meet potential mates around the world, it does have its share of scammers out to fool the innocent and unwary. A romance scam essentially occurs when strangers pretend romantic intentions, gain the affection of victims, and then use that goodwill to gain access to their victims’ money/ bank account or by getting them to commit financial fraud on their behalf.

Despite many warnings, hundreds of lonely and well-meaning online daters still fall prey to insidious scammers and heartless con artists who not only break their hearts, but break their bank accounts as well. Most of these scams seem to originate from, and are prevalent in West Africa(especially Nigeria) although they are becoming increasingly common in Russia and Eastern Europe Another emerging region is Thailand and The Phillipines or any other country where ‘mail order bridges” are available.

If it’s too good to be true, it usually is. It has been estimated that British men and women have lost more than 1 billion last year to online scams. Most of these scams come from overseas, thus detection and eventual prosecution is tricky and sometimes pointless. An online dating scam or “romance scam” happens when a scammer, either male or female, enters an online dating service or a chat room and makes contact with potential victims using invented profiles.

A lot of online dating sites accept members for free and usually don’t screen their members. This is fertile ground for scammers who love the anonymity and the venue to invent a profile that amazingly matches who you are looking for. These con artists usually tease you along, claiming to seek only a “true soul mate” and “real romance”.

They keep this front up until they are sure that you are ready to believe anything they type. The reality is, they really don’t care about you – they only want your money. But how can you tell a scam from the real thing? It can be quite difficult as most experienced scammers tread very carefully with their victims.

They usually invest weeks or months convincing the victim that they are in a loving cyber-relationship. A common sign of a dating scam is when the other party starts to ask for money to meet you.

It comes in many forms, from asking you to shoulder their plane fare because they are “broke” or asking you to sponsor their “Visa” so they can enter your country legally. They may say that they’ve been “stranded” in another country and want to come home, or that they’ve been robbed while traveling elsewhere.

Or that they actually have a “disease” or condition that they need to be in surgery for. If not surgery, they will claim that they need the cash for medicines anyway and you are the only person who can help them. When you do offer to send the money, they have no bank account where you can make a direct deposit to, so they can remain untraceable.

They prefer that you send the money via money transfer agents like Western Union. Sometimes a scam is easy to see through, like your chat partner posting an extremely gorgeous picture of himself/herself. It is not unheard of to use stolen pictures as bait to lure victims.

When you ask for your date’s phone number or address, he/she mysteriously does not answer your phone calls and has no voicemail option. Your online date also talks more about themselves than asking about you. Usually they also don’t answer a lot of your questions, or there is a delay in answering. This is likely because these scammers work on a lot of people at one time, so you are probably only one of many people he/she is chatting to and sending emails to. So how can you protect yourself? Start with never giving out any personal details to your new chat mates (home phone numbers, work address, etc). Opt for reputable dating sites and stay away from the free ones as much as you can. Try to find someone in your local area.

It also does not hurt to be skeptical if someone tries to “ping” you often, even when he/she knows you are not interested. Barrage them with a lot of questions or suggest meeting them and if they act suspiciously, you are probably dating a scammer. Bit if you’ve already lost money, there is really not a lot you can do to recover it. The best course of action would be to report the scammer’s profile to the administrators of the chat/dating site where you met him/her.

Rajinikanth

Rajnikanth: The man for all seasons has got a magical wand in his hands!

rajini1The stylish super-star of the south, Rajnikanth was born as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad on December 12, 1949 in Karnataka. After growing over the problematic, wayward adolescent years he found himself a job as a bus conductor in Bangalore. Not happy, leading a life of a drudge, he looked elsewhere for greener pastures. After appearing on stage for two amateur performances, he convinced himself to buy a ticket to the then Madras and to stardom in films. Interesting to learn that he even as a bus conductor had a fan following consisting of the commuters. The way he stroked his wind ruffled hair, his quick fire method of issuing tickets and his other mannerisms caught the fancy of the travellers. He migrated to Madras and started taking acting lessons in South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce. It was here that he ran into K. Balachander, a director, who loves experimenting with raw hands in his films. Balachander cast the shaggy haired Shivaji Rao as a good-for-nothing husband of Srividya in ‘Apoorva Raagangal’. Rajnikanth soon graduated to playing villain roles; be it the sadistic husband of Sujatha in ‘Avargal’ or the wolf in sheep’s clothing in ‘Moondru Mudichu’ or the lust-filled village rowdy in Bharathiraja’s ‘16 Vayadhinile’, Rajnikanth was the villain the people loved to hate. From here, it was a cakewalk for Rajni, playing the anti-hero and finally, the hero in ‘Bhairavi’.

rajini1Rajnikanth firmly grabbed the vacant, action-hero slot in Tamil movies and gave it a new meaning with a series of stunt movies wherein he routinely bashed up the baddies. As a breather he did act in some meaningful scripts like “Mullum Malarum” “Aval Appadithan” and “Buvana Oru Kelvikuri”. But the fans had already branded him as a firebrand action-hero and he had to stick to his image. Director Rajasekhar for a change dared to tap the comedy potential, which was lying dormant in Rajnikanth. He gave us the breezy ‘Thambikku Endha Ooru’, which saw Rajni balance the action and the comedy sequences with equal ease. The scene where he reads a soft-porn book while a snake enters his room is one to remember forever. The film went on to become a huge blockbuster and the path of Rajni’s future movies was laid. Rajnikanth had honed his action-comedy hero skills with a series of movies like ‘Nallavanukku Nallavan’, ‘Pokkiri Raja’, ‘Murattu Kaalai’ with S.P.Muthuraman. All these were mega-hits and consolidated his status as the number one crowd puller in Tamil movies. There was a brief lull when the much-hyped ‘Maaveeran’, his own production, flopped at the box-office. But then came ‘Padikkadhaavan’, one of his biggest hits and there was no looking back after that. For his next production ‘Valli’, he gave all major responsibilities, including direction, to newcomers while playing a cameo role himself. The movie was received well both critically and commercially.

Annamalai’s dialogues were seen by many as Rajnikanth’s direct dig to the then Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha and his fans thought he subtly hinted about his planned entry into politics. But nothing of that sort happened. Rajnikanth frequently denied any such intentions but the political overtones in his dialogues in movies like ‘Uzhaippaali’ and ‘Yejamaan’ did nothing to quell the rumours. As the elections neared, he directly came out against the CM, thundering that his only goal was to see her removed from office. He played a major part in putting together an alliance between the DMK and TMC, leading to, in no small part, their landslide victory in the last assembly polls. He preferred to be a kingmaker rather than a king! Later that year, he received the State award for best actor for his great performance as father and son in ‘Muthu’, arguably, his biggest hit to date. His latest movie “Padayappa” is a chart-buster and a money-spinner.

Compiled by U. Bharat.
