World Bank report says Pakistan`s infant mortality rate nearly double of India`s

Islamabad/Srinagar, June.9 : A World Bank inter-agency group report has revealed that the infant mortality rate (IMR) in Pakistan is nearly double that of India`s and indicated that Islamabad`s slide in an important social index is due to falling investments in the healthcare sector. According to the World Bank report, Pakistan ranks towards the bottom among countries in the world when it comes to infant and neonatal mortality. The report developed by the UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation – UNICEF, WHO and World Bank, says 66 infants died for every 1000 births in 2015 in Pakistan. This trend has been visible for the past several years with a marginal difference in percentages. Dr. Rehmat Beg of the Government Hospital in Karachi, said, “The economic situation in our country is not good, so, it becomes very difficult for the government to provide adequate medical facilities as compared to other countries. We are backward in facilitating medical aid. The basic health care facility is quite unstable now.” Some residents blame corruption in the government to be responsible for the failure in dealing with the cause. Zahida Begum, a resident of Karachi, said, “Who is responsible? They are all corrupt. They all run their private clinics and sell medicines. They don`t provide medicines to the poor and needy.” The mortality rates among children are often seen as a proxy for the level of social development in a country, since they reflect the level of nutrition, parents` education, and access to health services. The lack of clean water and sanitation facilities in Pakistan stands out as one of the biggest impediments to reducing child mortality. In India, improving health services and better sanitation facilities have led to a significant decline in infant mortality rate. The number of babies who die before their first birthday for every 1,000live births has improved from 44 in 2011 to 38 in 2015. In many states across India, the infant fertility rate has seen significant improvement because of proactive steps taken by the government. Saleem-ur-Rahman,Director, Health, Jammu and Kashmir, said, “Be it infant mortality rate, maternal mortality ratio, birth rate or death rate in the country all have seen an immense improvement. The reason is that the government of India is very proactive as they have launched many programmes and upgraded many others. There are many programmes child survival, save motherhood, then RCH, RCH1 and RCH2 were introduced. Later NRHM (National Rural Health Mission) was introduced. Now, NHM is continuing. So, it`s a support and funding from the government of India which made us to upgrade the healthcare delivery system, which is pan-India. It helped us to put focus and identify the gaps. The gaps have been identified and were addressed.” Several countries in Africa like Ethiopia, Ghana and even Afghanistan have better infant mortality rates than Pakistan. Given the facts mentioned in the World Bank report, it appears that Islamabad has a non-serious approach to the issue of infant mortality, and needs to wake up to deal with it promptly.

Man Utd legend Ryan Giggs offered new role on Mourinho’s coaching staff

London, May 24 : Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs has reportedly been offered a new role on the coaching staff led by Jose Mourinho, who is being considered as the favourite to replace Louis van Gaal at the helm of the Old Trafford club. Mourinho is expected to be appointed in the next 48 hours as new manager, with Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, due to meet his agent Jorge Mendes to finalise a three-year deal. According to reports, Mourinho is expected to bring his trusted deputy Rui Faria as assistant manager, which means Giggs could be in line for a demotion if he decides to continue with the club. The United legend, however, could opt to end his 25-year partnership with the club by refusing the post, the Guardian reported. Giggs, who retired in 2014 after serving United for four season, also took charge of the club temporarily after the then-manager David Moyes was sacked in 2014. Earlier in the day, van Gaal expressed that he was very disappointed to be unable to complete his intended three year plan, but added that the FA Cup glory would give the club a boost for next season and enable them to move forward and achieve greater success. United ended their troubled season on high with a FA Cup victory as van Gaal became the club’s first manager to win a major silverware since the retirement of legendary Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Dutch coach Danny Blind flays Man Utd over Van Gaal sacking

London, May 24 : Launching a scathing attack over Manchester United for sacking manager Louis van Gaal, Netherlands coach Danny Blind has admitted that the Dutchman’s dismissal came as a major shock for him and that he deserved a better treatment at Old Trafford. On Monday, United confirmed that they have parted ways with manager van Gaal, adding that the decision on his successor would be announced soon with Jose Mourinho being considered favourite for the vacant position. Blind had assisted van Gaal during the 2014 World Cup before taking over as the team’s national coach. Reflecting on the same, Blind said that he had spent a number of years with van Gaal and that the latter had always been a great coach. Van Gaal’s close friend further insisted that he was feeling extremely sad for the 64-year-old, especially because his sacking was not at all handled well, the Mirror reported. Earlier this year, Blind gave van Gaal a chance to escape from Old Trafford’s troubles by offering him the post of a technical director with the Dutch Football Federation. Van Gaal, however, turned down the role, saying that he wanted to complete the final year of his contract with United. United ended their troubled season on high with a FA Cup victory as van Gaal became the club’s first manager to win a major silverware since the retirement of legendary Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Nadda to brief Prez on NEET ordinance tomorrow

New Delhi, May 22 : Amid the ongoing controversy over the decision to clear an ordinance to keep state boards out of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) ambit this year, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda will brief President Pranab Mukherjee on the issue on Monday. President Mukherjee earlier sought legal advice on the ordinance to keep state boards out of the ambit of uniform medical entrance examination for this year. The ordinance, cleared by the Union Cabinet on Friday, is aimed at partially overturning a Supreme Court verdict which said all government colleges, deemed universities and private medical colleges would be covered under NEET. Earlier today, the state government decided that the examination will be applied in all medical colleges in the national capital. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called on the President earlier today to not to sign the ordinance. Kejriwal had earlier written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking him not to bring any order against the Supreme Court ruling on NEET, saying the students had welcomed the decision as it discouraged well endowed parents from making ‘donations’ to get their children admitted into reputed private medical colleges. However the Centre cleared the ordinance to postpone the exam by a year so that the students have enough time to prepare. Even the Congress Party has slammed the government’s decision to postpone the implementation of the exam alleging that private medical colleges were being favoured over the students. The Supreme Court had earlier ruled that the students will have to appear for NEET starting this academic session to seek admission to any medical or dental colleges in the country. More than 15 states were opposed to NEET and had raised issues like different syllabus and languages during the recent state health ministers’ meeting. The next phase of the exam is scheduled for July 24. Nearly 6.5 lakh students have already taken the medical entrance test in the first phase of NEET held on May 1. Once the ordinance is issued, students of state government boards will not have to sit for NEET on July 24.

Relief for medical students, NEET deferred to next year

New Delhi, May 20 : The Centre on Friday cleared the ordinance to postpone the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) exam by a year so that the students have enough time to prepare. The decision comes after a meeting chaired between Union Health minister J.P. Nadda and other state health ministers over the matter. The meeting was convened after several parliamentarians opposed the common medical entrance test, saying the NEET has created confusion among the students who have already applied for the state entrance exams. Earlier today, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking him not to bring any order against the Supreme Court ruling on NEET, saying the students had welcomed the decision as it discouraged well endowed parents from making ‘donations’ to get their children admitted into reputed private medical colleges. “It has come to my attention that reports are adrift that the Centre is making plans to overturn the decision by the Supreme Court and people have been tensed upon hearing this news. The people of the nation will be cheated if the Centre goes through with this decision. Just a few days ago, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda called a meeting over the issue, where almost all health ministers opposed NEET, except Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain,” the letter stated. Kejriwal added it is also being said that many politicians are running their own private medical colleges, in which some institutions are indulging in the practice of accepting large donations, which is why they were vehemently against the NEET examinations. “It is my humble request to you to ensure that no orders are brought against the Supreme Court ruling in the matter, otherwise people will think that the Centre stand with those who garner black money,” Kejriwal said. The Supreme Court had earlier ruled that the students will have to appear for NEET starting this academic session to seek admission to any medical or dental colleges in the country. The opposition parties have raised concerns that the students passing out from the state boards in vernacular languages and living in remote areas may not be able to perform well enough in common entrance exam despite being competitive.
